How does a ductless system work?

Spilt Ductless Systems

Spilt Ductless systems have an outside condenser and compressor, and one to four or more indoor blower units, called air handlers, mounted high on the wall that distribute air. The indoor and outdoor sections are connected by a thin conduit that houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, and a condensate drain.

The Conduit

The conduit is run through about a 3-inch hole hidden behind each air-handler. Each air handler cools the room in which its installed, and you set the temperature with a remote control.

Cost

Ductless systems can be more expensive than window air conditioners, and professional installation is needed. While not technically central air, it looks more modern, its more customizable and could be the option that is best for your needs.

Mini-split systems, also known as ductless air conditioners, are effective cooling systems that do not require conventional ductwork. They consist of an external compressor and an internal air handling unit connected by refrigerant lines.
A ductless AC transfers heat from the indoors to the outdoor unit, cooling the indoor space without ducts. Zoned cooling is possible, which means that you could run air conditioning in one room and not another.
The price can vary considerably depending on the number of indoor units and system capacity. For example, a single-zone system generally costs between $2,000 and $5,000. Multi-zone systems are more expensive, ranging from $5,000 to over $10,000.
Installing a single-zone system takes about 4–8 hours, but multi-zone installations may take up to 1-2 days.

Yes, many ductless systems are heat pumps, which can provide both cooling in the peak of summer and heating in the depths of winter.

Ductless units are highly energy-efficient, with SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings of between 16 and 30+. They eliminate ductwork losses, lowering utility bills.
Ductless AC installation requires expertise in electrical wiring, refrigerant handling, and proper placement. Professional installation is best for the safety and effective use of the system.
Regular service includes cleaning the filters and checking refrigerant levels, possibly even outside physical maintenance. A professional tune-up once a year is the ideal guest.
